The report addresses a common question among homeowners replacing aging HVAC equipment: Should they install a heat pump or replace their air conditioner? According to Hamilton Home Comfort, the right choice depends on the home’s existing equipment, budget, insulation, energy goals, and long-term ownership plans.
Based on the company’s current pricing for standard residential replacement installations, typical costs include:
- Central air conditioner: $4500-$5000
- Cold climate heat pump: $7800-$9500
- High-efficiency gas furnace: $5000-$6000
Final pricing may vary based on equipment size and efficiency, electrical requirements, ductwork condition, permits, accessibility, and other needs specific to the home.
For homeowners with a newer high-efficiency furnace, replacing only the air conditioner may offer the lowest upfront cost. Those replacing both heating and cooling equipment may benefit from a hybrid system that pairs a cold climate heat pump with a gas furnace. The heat pump provides electric heating during milder weather, while the furnace takes over during colder temperatures.
Qualifying heat pump installations may also be eligible for rebates generally ranging from $1,000 to $1,500, subject to homeowner eligibility, equipment requirements, and the applicable program. Hamilton Home Comfort assists eligible homeowners with equipment selection and rebate documentation.
